Home Firearm Safety Course

Details:  This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only.  This is a non-shooting course.  Students are taught safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to load and unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports.

Beginners Pistol Orientation

Details: Beginners Pistol Orientation is approximately 4 hours long, and is geared toward your own personal pistol, if you have one.  If you do not own a pistol no problem… we include a session on what to look for when buying a pistol.  If you own a pistol bring it to the class.  You need NO ammunition as firing is not part of this class.  It is not approved for a concealed carry permit.  The course consists of discussions of the following areas:

  • Self-defense firearms basics
  • Defensive  shooting fundamentals
  • Gear and gadgets
  • Basic and advanced skills

Beginners Rifle Orientation

Details: Beginners Rifle Orientation is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific rifle action type.  This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot your specific rifle action type, and is ideal for new firearm purchasers.

Students will learn safe gun handling; the particular rifle model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the rifle; and continued opportunities for skill development.

Beginners Shotgun Orientation

Details: Beginners Shotgun course is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific shotgun model. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific model shotgun at a moving target. Students will learn to safely handle a shotgun; the particular shotgun model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the shotgun; and continued opportunities for skill development.

Basics of Pistol Shooting Course

Details: The Basic of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience.  This course may be completed in a single day format or over several days with smaller blocks of instruction if you prefer.   Course topics include: gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety.

Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an Certified Instructor.  Students will take a written examination and receive a course completion certificate.

Basic Pistol students must demonstrate gun handling proficiency, qualify on the live fire range, and pass thw written exam to use this course for a concealed carry permit.

Basics of Rifle Shooting Course

Details: This course is at least 8 hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions; cleaning, and continued opportunities for skill development.

Basics of Shotgun Shooting Course

Details: This course is at least eight-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets. Students learn safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development.

Defensive Pistol Course

Details:  This is an intermediate level self-defense course. We focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence.

As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following:

  • How to apply safe gun handling when carrying a concealed firearm
  • Basic principles of concealment
  • The difference between cover and concealment
  • Drawing from the holster
  • Levels of mental awareness
  • Developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection
  • Shooting under stress
  • Clearing common stoppages
  • Move off the line of attack and shoot
  • Use of pocket pistols, and more

Personal Protection Course – Phase One

Details: Phase One (eight hour course) is an advanced level self-defense course. We focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. We teach the basic knowledge and skills essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of yourself and family, and to provide information on the individual’s right to self-defense.

Prerequisite: Students should be able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm. Prospective students can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing a Concealed Carry permit, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing a written preview assessment.

Description: As a student you will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontational situations, law regarding firearms, advise on how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for further training. (Note: the legal training will be done via a Legal Handout provided by the Kentucky State Police.)

Personal Protection Course – Phase Two

Details: Phase Two (eight hour course – More time will be allowed if student objectives are not completed) is also an advanced level self-defense course. We focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset on the street. We teach the basic knowledge and skills essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of yourself and family, and to avoid dangerous confrontations outside of your home environment.

Prerequisite: Personal Protection Course – Phase One is a prerequisite for this course. This class builds on knowledge gained from the Phase One Course.

Description: The course teaches the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to use, carry, transport, and store a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection away from home. Students spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 200 rounds of ammunition during this Phase Two. (Note: the legal training will be done via a Legal Handfout provided by the Kentucky State Police.)

Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading

Details: This course is eight hours in length and is conducted in a classroom. Each student is taught reloading safety; centerfire cartridge components; using the reloading manual and reloading data; equipment; and the metallic cartridge reloading process.
